Each year over 100,000 visitors come to Middleton Place National Historic Landmark to explore the culture and history of the Lowcountry. The history of Middleton Place spans three centuries including Arthur Middleton, the signer of the Declaration of Independence and the essential stories and contributions of over 3,000 enslaved men and women who lived and labored on properties owned by the Middletons. Visitors have the unique opportunity to experience America’s Oldest Landscaped Gardens, a House Museum, the Stable Yards with heritage breeds, along with artifacts, tours and activities that authentically connect people with the past.
Chicora Tours proudly offers its guests tours of Charleston’s most beautiful plantation: Middleton Place. The Middleton Place Tour is an all-inclusive experience with a detailed itinerary. Guests will be transported to Middleton Place from Downtown Charleston at the Charleston Visitors Center .The experience begins with guests having lunch at Middleton Place’s beautiful restaurant. The lunch consists of delicious and traditional Charleston dishes. The lunch menu caters to individuals with dietary restrictions. Here is a link to the Lunch Menu for your convenience.
After lunch guests will proceed to a half hour long semi-guided house museum tour. The house tour includes history about the Middleton family, displays of artifacts and family heirlooms and the opportunity to speak to and engage with one of Middleton Place’s knowledgable docents. After the house tour concludes guests will have further tour options.
The remainder of the itinerary is left to the discretion of the guests. A thirty minute guided tour of the Middleton Place Gardens is available as well as a forty minute Beyond the Fields/Eliza’s House lecture. This discusses the history of the enslaved people at Middleton Place. Guests can also spend this time walking the grounds or seeing the stable yards and farm animals.
The experience concludes with some time to visit the Garden Market or Museum Gift Shop. This is proceeded by returning back to the Charleston Visitors Center in Downtown Charleston. Transportation is provided in our spacious and luxurious Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van. - We recommend our guests to arrive at the Charleston Visitors Center at 375 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29403 at least 15 minutes prior to departure time for check-in and boarding.
- The Charleston Visitors Center has on-site paid parking for your convenience.
- In the event of a tour cancellation, guests can cancel the tour up to 24 hours before the tour departure time. Guests may cancel the tour after 24 hours before departure time however, a refund will not be provided.
- A minimum booking of two guests is required for the tour to operate.
